Stewart Winston Chapman Jr.

Chapman WinstonStewart Winston Chapman, Jr., of Bedford, VA ran off into the sunset to be reunited with his creator on February 6, 2019. Winston grew up in Charlottesville, the son of the late Stewart Winston Chapman and Joan Adams Chapman. He was a 1970 graduate of Lane High School and he attended the Medical College of Virginia at VCU, where he met his future wife, and graduated in 1975 with a B.S. in Pharmacy. He lived his adult life in Bedford, VA where he practiced Pharmacy for thirty-six years, initially at Green’s Drug Store and later at Moneta Pharmacy, which he co-owned with his wife. Winston was a real nature lover and spent much of his life engaged in activities such as running, hiking, biking, camping, kayaking, and kite flying. Although he never mastered his beloved cello, he greatly enjoyed music and sang in the choir at Bedford Presbyterian Church for many years. A man with an unusual sense of humor, Winston believed laughter was a tonic for life. Left behind to carry on are his wife of 42 ½ years, Georgia Fisher Chapman; his daughter and acquired son, Betty Joan “Beejay” Alexander and husband, Matt; a brother, Harry Page Chapman; a sister, Marion C. Dudley; and a host of family and friends. A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m., Monday, February 11, 2019, at Bedford Presbyterian Church with The Rev. John T. Salley and The Rev. Loren Tate Mitchell presiding. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers memorial can be made to Bedford Presbyterian Church, 105 W. Main Street, Bedford, VA 24523. Anne Clare Stanton Radle

Radle Anne 1Anne Clare Stanton Radle, 84, of Hurt, VA, formerly of Huddleston, VA died Friday, February 1, 2019. She was born in The Bronx, NY on September 15, 1934 of Irish Immigrants, the daughter of the late Thomas Stanton and Kathleen Goulding Stanton. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Joseph Bernard Radle; daughter, Anne Derrick; sisters, Kathleen Dalton and Eileen Allmier. Anne was an active child; jumping rope, playing tag, stickball, roller-skating, during WWII: air raid drills, blackouts rationing, radio updates and victory. She was a graduate of Walton High School in NYC; an avid reader, student- swimmer, walker, gardener and volunteer.  She met the love of her life Joseph Radle, while roller skating.  They lived a life of adventure, sailing from Long Island Sound to Smith Mountain Lake, VA and enjoyed traveling. She loved Jesus and was a faithful wife, mom, sister, friend, and teacher. She is survived by her sisters, Noreen Frey of Ridge, NY and Patricia Bendelow  of Fuquay-Varina, NC, sons, Joseph Radle and wife, Monica of Tacoma, WA, Daniel Radle and wife, Dawn of Ridge, NY, Stephen Radle and wife, Melissa of New Port Richey, FL; son-in-law, Andrew Derrick of Hurt, VA; grandchildren, David Sandidge, Krystal Krumer, Daniel Radle, Carolyn Radle, Benjamin Radle, Noah Radle, Hannah Beth Derrick, Samuel Derrick, Joseph Derrick; great grandchildren, David Sandidge Jr., Bella Sandidge, and many loving nieces and nephews. A Mass of Resurrection will be said at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at Resurrection Catholic Church, 15353 Moneta Road, Moneta, VA with Father Jim Gallagher and Deacon Chris Barrett officiating. Following the interment in the church cemetery, there will be a reception in Morrow Hall. Michael Gary "Mike" Sloan

Sloan Mike 2Michael “Mike” Gary Sloan, 67, of Bedford, passed away on Tuesday January 29, 2019 with his family and beloved dog, Zoe, by his side.Mike was born to William and Agnes Sloan on June 21, 1951 in Roanoke. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ellen; their three children, Marlena, Will, and Maggee; three grandchildren, Dustin, Sterling, and Palmer, and his two sisters, Patsy Ray and Nancy Daniel and their families. He was preceded in death by William Sloan, his father, and Agnes Sloan, his mother. His children and grandchildren remember him as a patient, strong, gentle, and loving man. Michael was passionate about sports, especially the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, Virginia Cavaliers and the Liberty High School Minutemen. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and enjoyed being an active part of the congregation. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Trinity Baptist Church, 947 Lyle Street, Bedford, with Rev. Vernon DeLong officiating. Marie Faye Markham Hughes

Hughes MarieMarie Faye Markham Hughes, 78, of Big Island, died Saturday, January 26, 2019. She was born in Lynchburg, VA on May 18, 1940 a daughter of the late Leonard Thomas Markham and Ola Wilson Markham Smith. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth Gene Mitchell, Sr. and her second husband George William Hughes, Jr.; two brothers, Frank Markham, Lewis Markham; sister, Edith Mitchell and her husband, Cary; niece, Ola Michelle Markham; and nephew, Kevin Andrew Mitchell. She was retired from Rubatex and was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church, Chestnut Hill Free Will Baptist Ladies Auxiliary, and the Recycle Team. She is survived by her son, Kenneth G. Mitchell II; daughters, Jeanne Marie Watson and husband Christopher, Connie Nicely and husband Vincent; grandchildren, Timothy Laughlin and wife Tammy, Terry Laughlin and wife Sarah, Katherine Watson, Amanda Watson, Aaron Nicely, Ashley Nicely; great-grandchildren, TyLee Laughlin, Chase Laughlin, Hailey Laughlin, and Cody Ouellette; two sisters, Delores “Punkin” Wilson and husband, Riley, Barbara Campbell and husband, Brent; brother, Ernest “Blue” Markham and wife, Emma Jean; sister-in-law, Bessie Markham Christian and husband, Ray; many friends, nieces, and nephews. Tammy May O'Neill

tammyTammy May O’Neill, 51, of Bedford, died Monday, January 21, 2019. She was born in Wilmington, DE on May 15, 1967, a daughter of John Daniel O’Neill and Andrea Petine O’Neill. Tammy was an RN at Heartland Hospice. She loved her job as a nurse and being able to help others. She was a special woman and so full of life and she did everything she could to make the people around her feel very loved.  Tammy loved the New York Rangers, her cats and dogs, and will be missed by her children and so many others. In addition to her parents she is survived by a daughter, Maran O’Neill; three sons, Patrick Catalano, Devin O’Neill, and Ryan Skorupski; brother, Thomas O’Neill; sister, Traci O’Neill; and her boyfriend, Gerry Lacy. Jason Paul Lutz

Lutz Jason 1Jason Paul Lutz, 40, of Bedford, died Wednesday, January, 16, 2019. He was born in North Dakota on January 17, 1978 a son of Steven Lutz and the late Jerrie Bledsoe Giannotti. In addition to his mother he is preceded in death by an infant baby of Jason Lutz and Ashley Witt. Jason proudly served his country as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army where he served two tours in Iraq. He was a wonderful father to his daughter. He was smart, loving, and was a man of courage, bravery, and integrity. In addition to his father he is survived by his fiancée, Ashley Witt; daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Lutz; brothers, Michael Rogers and wife Chelsea, David Rogers, Dusty Lutz and wife Laura; step-father, Dan Giannotti; and numerous other family and friends. Clara Lee Seabolt Mayhew

Mayhew ClaraOn January 14, 2019 at 4:50 p.m. Clara Lee Seabolt Mayhew joined her husband, George Ray Mayhew and her daughter, Ramona Carol Mayhew in Heaven.  Her Lord Jesus Christ graciously and peacefully took her home.  We are very grateful for her peaceful transition to her Heavenly home.  Clara was gifted with the ability to Love.  Her devotion to her husband and children was her biggest desire in life and she did both with exceptional diligence.  She is survived by four children, Randy Thomas Mayhew, Rhonda Lee Mayhew Toms and husband, Bill; George Rodney Mayhew and wife Kathy; and Ronny Rucker Mayhew and wife, Kathy; eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Seabolt Chappelle; two sisters-in-law, Minerva M. Johnson and Sadie Seabolt; three brothers-in-law, Murrill Johnson, Hobart Markham and William (Bill) Chappelle.   The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Burch-Messier Main Street Location, 317 W. Main Street, Bedford.  A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 18, 2019 at Sedalia Baptist Church with Rev. Dennis Wayne Nash

Nash Dennis 2Dennis Wayne Nash, 65, of Gladys, Va. passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019 in his home surrounded by his friends and family. He was born in Lynchburg, Va. August 5, 1953. Dennis was the son of Janet Clement Nash and the late Buford Hunter Nash of Gladys, Va. He is survived by his wife Carrie Elizabeth Nash; his son, Justin Jordan Nash and his wife Cyndal Williams Nash; and two grandchildren, Henly and Ryder Nash; two stepdaughters, Haleigh Britt Umphlette and husband Charles Ryan Umphlette and Courtney Deanna Britt; his siblings, Cynthia Nash Bailey and husband Mack, Timothy M. Nash and wife Emily, and Beverly F. Nash. Dennis was president of Nash Forest Products and spent his life helping and serving others in his community. He was also a member of the Gladys Volunteer Fire Department for 45 years. Family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at Gladys Volunteer Fire Department to celebrate the life of Dennis. Eric Coleman Rice

Rice EricEric Coleman Rice, 48, of Bedford, died Saturday, January 12, 2019. He was born in Lynchburg, VA on April 24, 1970, a son of Ronald Clair “Ronnie” Rice and Barbara Coleman Rice. He was a member of Bedford Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he is survived by his daughter, Madeline Mae Rice; a son, Caden Coleman Rice; sister, Suzanne Roberts; two nephews, Cory Nichols, Ryan Nichols; friend and mother of his children, Dawn Rice; and many dear family and friends. Ronald William Harris

Harris RonaldRonald William Harris, 73 of Gainesville Ga, died as a result of a tragic motor vehicle accident on January 12th in Pualaski Virginia. He is survived by his wife Lucille Harris and their 5 children (Joe, Brian, Serena, Amanda and John) and their 2 grandchildren, (Audrey and Sebastien).  He was born August 26th, 1945 in Baltimore Maryland. Mr. Harris proudly served his country during the Vietnam war from 1964 through 1968 as a heavy equipment operator. When he left the Service, he worked on the loading docks in Long Beach California as a crane operator. He also worked as a mechanic fixing big rigs. In 1982 he started working for Kiser Sand & Gravel until 2001 when the family moved to Georgia. Ron was a skilled large crane operator and he contributed to the local infrastructure in North East Georgia working on both the Lake Zwerner Dam and Cedar Creek pumping station. Ron's hobby and passion in life was old military trucks. After retiring in 2010 from the construction industry, he worked extensively on restoring and modifying Vietnam era and later military trucks. He was very active and passionate in the hobby and helped hundreds of others through hours of phone calls and communications assisting with his ideas and knowledge. Ron was a very patriotic honorable man who loved God and country. He had a heart of gold and would put others above himself. He loved helping any way he could while sharing his knowledge and talents. We will be having a celebration of life in honor of Ron on Saturday, March 16, 2019 in the early afternoon in the Gainesville, Georgia area.
