Mary Catherine Trent Hickman

Hickman Mary 2Mary Trent Hickman, 78, of Bedford, died Saturday, December 1, 2018. She was born in Bedford on July 24, 1940, a daughter of the late Carl Edward Trent and Edna Powell Trent. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Eithel O. “Rat” Hickman; a grandson, Steven Lewis Wright; three brothers, James Trent, Harry Lee Trent and Johnny Trent; two sisters, Bonnie Ducharme and Ann Waldron. Mary was a member of Peaks View Christian Church where she took care of the babies in the nursery and she loved them all. She also cooked for Bedford Christian Ministries. She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia King (Jack) of Hurt, VA; sister, Marie Brownley (Steve) of Chesapeake, VA; great-grandson, Keane Lewis Wright of Roanoke, VA; special niece, Sonya Overstreet Jenson of Rustburg, VA; sister and brother-in-law’s; and nieces and nephews that she loved. She was Nana to four special grand-children of the heart, Austin, Keira, Maddox, and Allie St. Clair. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Peaks View Christian Church, 1604 Moneta Rd.  Bedford, VA  24523. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at Peaks View Christian Church with Pastor Ricky St. Clair officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Land Cemetery. Robert Bowen Carpenter, Jr.

Carpenter RobertRobert Bowen Carpenter, Jr. claimed the promise of resurrection on November 28, 2018 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the son of the late Robert B. Carpenter, Sr. and Louise Cureton Carpenter. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Cathcart Carpenter; his son, David Randolph Carpenter; and his sister, Hester Louise Carpenter. He is survived by his daughters, Lee C. Harizanoff (Chris Dahm), Catherine C. Bear (Joseph) and June C. Carpenter; as well as six grandchildren, Laura McGrory (Mike), Joseph, Michael (Kailyn), Brian and Robert Bear, Joshua Carpenter; and four great-grandchildren. A graduate of Clemson University, Bob worked for English Construction Company retiring as a Vice President after over fifty years. He served the town of Altavista as Planning Commission Chairman for over fifty years and was awarded the Altavista Outstanding Citizen. He was active in the United Methodist Church serving as Lynchburg District and Virginia Conference Lay Leader. He attended multiple General Conferences. Bob was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Thaxton, VA and the recipient of the first Harry Denman Award for Evangelism in the United Methodist Church. Bob was a Mason, an Eagle Scout, and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. In 1937, he traveled to the Netherlands for the Boy Scout World Jamboree. Bob served his country in World War II and helped liberate the first concentration camp. He was a member of the VFW. He was a life long lover of anything related to trains and was a member of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors on the MICU, Pulmonary Unit and Palliative Care at Lynchburg General Hospital for their loving and competent care. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 3, 2018 at Lane Memorial United Methodist Church, 1201 Bedford Avenue, Altavista, VA with Rev. Marci Huntsman and Rev. Ben Horrocks officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Internment will be in Green Hill Cemetery. Frank Edward Padgett

Padgett FrankFrank Edward Padgett, 63, of Bedford, died Sunday, November 25, 2018. He was born in Bedford on September 24, 1955, a son of the late Clyde Edward Padgett and Gracie May Zimmerman Padgett. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Mary Ann Johnson. Frank was owner and operator of Frank’s Super Shine. Frank is survived by his wife of 31 years, Dr. Lora Padgett; two brothers, Jerry Wayne “Butch” Padgett and Bobby L. Padgett; a niece, Tracy Waechter; and nephew, Chris Padgett; great-nephews and niece, Cameron Padgett, Dakota Padgett and Kaylee Waechter; his father-in-law, Floyd Jasper Johnson and his wife, Thelma; and numerous other nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at Burch-Messier Walnut Street Chapel, 1235 Walnut Street with Rev. Dr. David L. Henderson officiating. Joe Morris Parker

Parker JoeJoe Morris Parker, 83, of Bedford, died Saturday, November 24, 2018. He was born in Bedford, VA on January 4, 1935, a son of the late Wilmer Lucas Parker and Ester Overstreet Parker. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Lucas Parker; sister, Josephine Parker Agee; and half-sister, Brenda Orange Bowyer. Joe is survived by his half-sister, Bonnie Bowman; niece, Susie Fulton and husband Robert; nephews, Rickie Agee and wife Kim, Marty Agee and wife Kelly; and numerous other family and friends. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Bedford Church of God, with Rev. David Scott and Rev. Geoff Hubbard officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Laura Lee Arrington

Arrington LauraLaura Lee Arrington, 43, of Bedford, died Friday, November 23, 2018. Laura was born on April 30, 1975 in Bedford, Virginia. She spent her childhood in Bedford and upon graduation from Liberty High School in 1993, she left for the University of Virginia. At UVA, Laura majored in English and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, where she made many life-long friends. Upon graduation in 1997, Laura moved to Atlanta and taught art at the Wesleyan School. This was the beginning of a journey that took her from art school in Savannah, GA, to New York City, to Los Angeles where she used her artistic talents in creative roles at Brooks Brothers and other retail companies, to Florida and ultimately back to Bedford. Though each of these locations and experiences were unique, the common thread was the impact that Laura had on the lives of those she met. She loved everyone and had an extraordinary ability to connect with others. Her hugs were showered on people and pets and endeared her to all. She had a passion for music, literature and art and was incredibly talented in all three; gifting family and friends with notes of encouragement, works of art and other personalized tokens that expressed her love and appreciation. Having accepted Christ at an early age, the Lord took her to her Heavenly home on November 23, 2018. Laura was a smart, creative, beautiful young woman and her laughter and song will be carried in the hearts of those who loved her. Laura is survived by her parents, H. Steven and Donna T. Arrington of Bedford, her sister, Wendy and her husband, Larry Eason of Pomona, CA; her sister, Kristy and her husband, Adam Estrada of Reston, VA; and the niece she adored, Elise Eason; and extended family. Thelma Omer Driskill Preston

Preston Thelma 1Thelma Omer Preston of Huddleston, VA passed away peacefully on November 22, 2018 at Westminster Canterbury of Lynchburg. She was the widow of Coy D. Kirby, Sr. and John L. (Jack) Preston. She was born in Lynchburg, VA on September 12, 1931 and  was a daughter of Norvell Smith Driskill and Omer Thelma Hawkins Driskill. In addition to her husbands and parents, she is preceded in death by her two sisters, Lousie D. (Sis) Preston and Ann D. Turner; and her son, Norvell Lenwood (Len) Kirby; and a step-granddaughter, Lacey Thumma Dinsmore. She is survived by her daughters, Gloria K. Tuck and husband Danny, Connie K. McDaniel and husband Donnie; son, Coy Davis Kirby, Jr. and wife Ruth; step-daughter, Linda P. Thumma and husband Earl; twelve grandchildren; and sixteen great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Mentow Baptist Church, Huddleston, VA., with a visitation to follow. Floyd Dorothy0001Dorothy Louise Floyd, 84, of Big Island, died Wednesday, November 21, 2018. She was born in Bedford County on May 29, 1934. She is preceded in death by her husband, Mack Floyd. She is survived by her brother, David Goff (Jenny); her children, Irine Goff (Bobby), Ann Goff (Eddie), Robin Garland all of Big Island, Odell Floyd (Dale) of Monroe, Linda Bright (Bill) of Roanoke,; seven grandchildren, Bonnie Elder (Drew), Randy Floyd, Roger Floyd, Mike McDaniel (Samantha), Bradford Pugh (Sarah), Emily Floyd; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A funeral service will be held 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Big Island Baptist Church, with Rev. Mike Watkins officiating. A burial will follow in Hunting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. John Telford Marine

John Telford Marine, 61, of Gladstone, died Monday, November 19, 2018. He was born in New Jersey on April 8, 1957, a son of the late John Marine Sr. and Betty McGregor Marine. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Rodney Marine; his first wife, Isabelle Quinn Marine; step-son, Daniel Burnett; and best friend, Don Collier. John was a patriotic man and had a real love for animals, especially his cats. He was an avid fisherman and dumpster diver. He is survived by his wife of 8 years, Rhonda McCormick Marine; sister, Marie Suzanne Marine-Cliff; son, Joe Reese (Becky) of Chesapeake, VA; daughter, Sally Bradley (Mike) of El Paso, TX, Mary Gonzalez (Shane); granddaughter, Lexie Alley; best friend, Curt Robertson; numerous nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 24, 2018, at Driskill Funeral Chapel, 201 Grandview Drive, Amherst, VA 24521. She was born in Bedford County on September 21, 1925, a daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Barton and Dolie Saunders Barton. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Garrett Fizer; son, Tommy Barton; great-grandson, Alexander Barton; and son-in-law, John Carter, Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Rebecca Carter, Charlene Douglas and husband Scott; sons, Carl Barton, Kevin Fizer; sister, Geraldine Carter; daughter-in-law, Valerie Barton; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Joanne Tucker. Samuel Wayne Dooley

Dooley Samuel Wayne 2Samuel Wayne Dooley, 72, of Penhook, VA died Friday, November 9, 2018. He was born in Bedford on April 6, 1946, a son of the late Harry Burk Dooley and Dorothy Graham Dooley. Wayne loved Smith Mountain Lake, boating, golf carts, and going to the American Legion Post #16. He was retired in maintenance at Langley Apartments. Wayne served his country in the United States Air Force. He is survived by his three sons, Heath Dooley and wife Keely, Jay Dooley and wife Joyce, Chris Dooley and wife Margie; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; brother, Harry W. “Bill” Dooley and wife Teri; cousin, Lily Smith; special friend, Delores Moody; and his friend, Angelina Clemmon. A celebration of his life will be held 7:00 p.m., on Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at American Legion Post #16, 1301 Greenview Dr., Lynchburg, VA.
