Dr. Harmon Hayden Haymes

Dr. Harmon Hayden Haymes, 84, of Bedford died Saturday, August 20, 2011 at his residence.  He was born in Lynchburg on June 8, 1927 son of the late Joseph Albert Haymes and Reba Hayden Haymes.  Dr. Haymes was a member of Bedford Baptist Church and served in the Army during the Korean War.  He was a Lynchburg College graduate and received his MA and PhD from UVA.  Dr. Haymes was a Professor of Economics at Smith College, Washington and Lee, VCU and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. He also was served as Vice President in Research at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Carter Haymes, sister, Cara Alcock; half-brother, Burch Haymes; half-sister, Jane Logwood.  He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Beatrice Mason Haymes; his daughter, Elizabeth Haymes Witt and husband, Stephen; his son, William Hayden Haymes and wife, Patricia; a grandson, Thomas Stratton Haymes; a brother, Joseph Albert Haymes; many nieces and nephews. The family would like to give a special thank you to his caregivers and the Bedford Hospice.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Bedford Baptist Church Elevator Fund, 1516 Oakwood Street, Bedford, VA 24523.  A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2011 in Greenwood Cemetery with Dr. David L.
