Daniel John DeWitt, Jr. 78, of Moneta, died Sunday, June 26, 2011 in Virginia Veterans Care Center. He was born on July 18, 1932 in Everett, MA a son of the late Daniel John DeWitt, Sr. and Catherine Clair Gill DeWitt. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Charles DeWitt, three brothers, John, Arthur and Richard DeWitt; a sister-in-law, Doris DeWitt; a grandson, Mark Moye. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Margaret Welch DeWitt, a son, Daniel (Sandra) DeWitt III; five daughters, Helen (Robert) Ryan; Caroline (George) Perdue; Cathy (Randy) Moye; Fran (Randy) Via; Mary Perdue; sisters-in-law, Betty DeWitt, Maureen DeWitt; 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, Moneta. Dan was a Navy Veteran serving in Korea. He was a local Builder/Developer/Realtor. He served the community in a variety of ways. He not only coached sandlot football for a number of years, he was also a past president of both Roanoke Valley Regional Home Builders and the Virginia BASS State Federation. He was a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus and a Founding Member and Captain of the Scruggs Rescue Squad. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated 12 noon on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at Resurrection Catholic Church, 15353 Moneta Rd. Moneta, VA with Father Salvador Añonuevo celebrating. Burial of his cremated remains will immediately follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the Mass at the church and also anytime at the home of Dan and Margaret. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Resurrection Catholic Church, 15353 Moneta Rd, Moneta, VA 24121; Virginia Veterans Care Center (Attn: Patti Smith) 4550 Shenandoah Ave, Roanoke, VA 24017; or the charity of your choice.
